The Differences Between Grow Tents and Grow Cabinets

The Differences Between Grow Tents and Grow Cabinets

Which one should you get?

The Differences Between Grow Tents and Grow Cabinets

Both grow tents and grow cabinets provide the perfect growing conditions for plant indoors. They are both ideal for beginner growers who want to keep their indoor garden small. Although both can successfully grow healthy plants, one has features that the other doesn’t, and these will matter when it comes to your gardening needs. So if you are looking to grow indoor plants and wondering which one to get then, you’ve landed on the right article. This week, we will discuss the differences between grow tents and grow cabinets to help you decide which one to get.

Size and portability

Gorilla Grow Tent Shorty

The sizes of most grow tents are flexible; you can choose to make it bigger or higher by using extension kits that come with it. These tents are also made is so many sizes, all you have to do is choose the one that fits the available space you have at home. You can easily move them around as well when needed. Grow cabinets, on the other hand, have a fixed size and are not portable. So if you do not plan on moving around your grow space, you can go with a grow cabinet. However, if you plan on expanding your garden in the future, it’s best to go with a grow tent.

Assembly

SuperLocker 3.0 LED Grow Cabinet

A grow tent tends to get set up longer than a grow cabinet. The latter is pre-assembled, usually already has everything in it and all you need to do is just plug it in and start growing. Grow tents require effort and time as you will be installing everything, from the LED grow lights, to the fans and filters. If you do not want to go through the hassle of installation, go with the cabinet. However, if you have the time and would love to customize your grow space, the tent is the ideal one to get.

Durability

Dark Propagator 2.6 DP60

It is pretty apparent that when it comes to durability, the grow cabinet wins. Unless you are buying the high-quality tents, you won’t be worrying about wear and tear and busted zippers. So be prepared to invest in high-quality tents if you prefer them over the cabinets. The latter is made of a sturdy combination of steel and wood, just like the typical cabinet in your bedroom. Because of the materials it is made of, grow cabinets tend to be more expensive than grow tents.

Security

Grow Cabinet Triple Locking Doors

Grow cabinets are also perfect if you plan to be a discreet grower. These cabinets give privacy, and could easily pass as ordinary furniture in your living room or bedroom. Grow tents, on the other hand, are not too easy to hide from visitors. So if you regularly have people coming over and you don’t want them to know about your indoor garden, then it’s best to go with a grow cabinet.

How to Protect LED Grow Lights

Here are some helpful tips on how to get the most out of your grow lights.

SolarSystem 1100 UVB LED Grow Lights

Getting LED grow lights for your grow room is a wise investment, whether it’s for your hobby or business. Not only are you saving energy and other costs in the long run, but you also get to get the maximum yields you desire from your crops. And to make sure that you get the most life out of your LED grow lights, here are a few helpful tips on how to protect them and allow them to run properly throughout their lifespans.

Use a power stabilizer.

Using a power stabilizer or a voltage regulator for your lighting units can keep you safe from power hazards. Power fluctuations, power surges, and power spikes can damage the internal components of the lights such as the power drivers.  Connecting them to a power stabilizer will regulate the voltage from the power box and prevent power fluctuations from damaging your units. Having a power stabilizer also makes sure that there is no downtime with your lighting, especially during the critical plant growth phases.

Use a surge protector.

You can also use a surge protector to prevent power surges from damaging the internal components of your lights. It works by diverting the power surge to the ground so it won’t reach your grow lights. Power stabilizers and surge protectors are similar devices that can help maintain the correct voltage, but each of them works in a bit different way. The former provides any connected electrical device with a constant voltage while the latter suppress power surges that may result from faulty wiring or lightning strikes. Also, surge protectors are much smaller and lighter.

Avoid overloading power outlets.

Never overload the outlets of your surge protector with too many devices. Doing so may lead to short-circuiting which can then cause power outages. The internal effect of overloading is the damaging of the internal components of your grow lights, while the external effect is the overheating of the unit which may lead to fire hazards and injury.

Regularly check your lights.

These lights do need less maintenance, but it won’t hurt to regularly check the units if they are working properly. See if they are building moisture and already have water droplets, especially if they are not the waterproof kind. That is why you should not forget to check the humidity of your grow room as well, as excessive moisture will cause droplets to form on the lights.

Clean as needed.

Lastly, you have the clean your LED grow lights as needed. Notice some dust and dirt on the surface? Wipe them off with a clean lint-free towel. For stubborn dirt, you can use an air duster or canned air, so there is no need to wet the lights. But for the glass under the lights, you can use a standard glass cleaner. Do not forget, always unplug your grow lights before cleaning them!
